Having said that, my desktop at home was built with complete silence in mind, all passively cooled except for a 200mm fan at the slowest setting... and it's not nuts yet :)

I have a server with 4 200mm fans, the cpu fan, and 3 90mm fans, and 4 300gb WD raptor drives. I lined my case with dynamat xtreme, the case makes virtually no noise.

It sounds like it may be a Windows XP driver issue, since Linux and Vista show 256mb.

from intels site

What is the maximum amount of video memory my computer can use?

Maximum Graphics Memory**
Intel® Graphics Controller Microsoft Windows* XP and 2000 Microsoft Windows Vista*
Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family 1 GB** 2 GB**
Intel® G41, G43, G45, Q43, and Q45 Express Chipsets 1 GB** 2 GB**
Intel® G35 Express Chipsets 384 MB** 358 MB**
Intel® G31, G33, Q33, and Q35 Express Chipsets 384 MB** 287 MB**
Mobile Intel® GL960 and GM965 Express Chipsets 384 MB** 358 MB**
Intel® G965 Express Chipsets 384 MB** 358 MB**
Intel® Q963 and Q965 Express Chipsets 256 MB** 256 MB**
Intel® 946GZ Express Chipsets 256 MB** 256 MB**
Mobile Intel® 945GM Express Chipset Family 224 MB** 256 MB**
Intel® 945G Express Chipset Family 224 MB** 256 MB**

**Note: The actual amount of maximum graphics memory on your computer may be less than the listed amounts as it greatly depends on your computer model's specific configuration. Configuration factors may include but are not limited to:

* The graphics memory allocation method set by your computer manufacturer
* Amount of system memory available
* Amount of pre-allocated memory
* Operating system.

The best place for obtaining information about your computer's specific configuration is from your computer manufacturer. Your computer manufacturer may have altered features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes that may limit the maximum graphics memory amount possible for your computer.

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-029090.htm

so this suggests that the max in XP is 224mb, (same as MSI wind) so its all down to the lenovo BIOS.

I am running Ubuntu, and I do not know where to see how much vram my system is using. I did the tweak in the BIOS with use default settings, but that didn't seem to help anything. Any other ideas for us Linux guys?

Code: Select all
grep -ir 'VideoRAM' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Here's the output of that command in my slackware 12.1

(**) intel(0): VideoRam: 262144 KB

Mine says the same thing:

(==) intel(0): VideoRam: 262144 KB

So does this mean that our systems are really using 262MB of memory for video?

262144KB=256MB not 262. 1MB=1024KB

it could be listing a generic or wrong amount.

anyone know what device the video card is on in linux for a cat command?
