FAQ on the S10

Postby mister2 » Sat Dec 27, 2008 3:55 pm

Q: What is the maximum amount of memory I can install?
A: The maximum amount of usable memory that can be installed on the S10/S10e/S9 is 2GB. It has one slot for a 200 pin DDR2 memory stick. On some models, mostly older ones, came with 512MB of memory soldered on board (non removable) and the one available slot. Up to a 2GB stick may be installed in the available slot. Although you should have a total of 2.5GB of memory with a 2GB stick installed (some OS will report 2.5GB of total memory), the only usable amount is 2GB. This is due to the limitation of the 945GSE chipset.

Q: How can I upgrade the hard drive?
A: All models of IdeaPad S can accommodate a standard 2.5" SATA hard drive. The physical dimensions are 70 x 100 x 9.5mm. Any standard 2.5" SATA hard drives with these dimensions will work including 2.5" SATA SSD drives. The standard hard drive compartment is not occupied for models that comes with a 4GB SSD drive. The 4GB SSD drive is on board.

Q: Why doesn't my battery charge?
A: It will not charge the battery if it is already 95% - 100% charged. Once the battery drops below 95%, it will start charging again.

Q: On screen status indicator for brightness, volume, etc. are missing.
A: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2794

Q: How do you disable the beep that sounds when plugging and unplugging the AC cord?
A: Install the latest BIOS and the option to disable it will be available in the BIOS.
Or within a windows operating system, you can disable it by using the following method.

More info on the 945gse chipset (Intel datasheet): http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=35553

Some other S10 FAQ's:

1) S10e comes with a 6-cell battery and bluetooth (so for the S10e no need to purchase the 6-cell battery or bluetooth upgrade).

2) The "e" in Lenovo Ideapad S10e stands for education and the model is designed for the contemporary student. Therefore the S10e complement the S10 which is designed for the general consumer.

3) S10 vs. S10e:
Different HDD sizes: The S10 is offered in 80 and 160gb 5400rpm HDD drives. The S10e is offered with the same drives as the S10 but also offers a 4gb SSD.
Screen sizes: The screen size on the S10e is a bit smaller (10.1") than the S10 (10.2"), and the S10e has a WSVGA Glossy LED backlit TFT (1024 x 576) while the S10 has a WSVGA AntiGlare TFT (1024x600).
Operating Systems: The S10 comes standard with Microsoft Windows XP Home ULCPC, the S10e offers the same OS, but also offers a Linux OS version. The S10e also has a splashtop setup (quick access to multimedia, web, etc without accessing an OS).

4) How do I upgrade the HDD?
You can choose any 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128gb SSD drive or go with the traditional 80,160, 200, 250, 300, 350, 500gb 5400rpm or 7200rpm laptop/notebook SATAII drive.

5) How do I upgrade to 802.11N?
You can choose MINI PCI Express Intel 5300 802.11N or Atheors AR5008, or Broadcom 4321 801.11N wifi card on S10/S10e. If there are 3 connectors on card, you can choose any external wireless mini pci antenna to connect it and lay the cable under the keyboard(do not touch the metal part on mainboard).

I'm sure there are more FAQ's, but that'll be my contribution for now.

Just a little clarification on item (1), I believe that applies to the American and European market. In Malaysia and Singapore (and possibly in other Asian market, members there may want to comment), the S10 now comes with the 6 cell battery and Bluetooth (with 160G HDD and 1G RAM) so do not accept anything less. Thus the S10e is not available locally.

Good point, what makes things really confusing is Lenovo's inconsistent specs across the global market. An S10e US-side is configured differently than the EU-spec S10e. A little conformity would certainly make things quite a bit easier.

Here's one:

What are the differences between the S9 and S10? Answer: The only difference is the screen physical size. The screen resolution is the same. The S9 also has all the same memory, hard drive, etc, upgrade options as well as all the same ports (2 USB, card reader, etc).

The S9 does come with a smaller LCD with the same resolution, but that is not the only difference.
1) it comes with a linux install as an option (some places the only option)
2) it comes with a 4GB SSD, the S10 does not have the option.

True but I was thinking in terms of the questions asked in other threads - no one asks about the linux OS (as I understand it the S10 is/was offered with a Linux as well depending on the market area) and the only time anyone asked about the 4GB flash was to ask if the hard drive bay is the same as the S10 (it is).

I purchased an S10 in the US and would like to add Bluetooth and a 6V battery to my computer. Can I do this? Also, I am having problems connecting my S10 to the Internet via a wireless connection. My S10 connects to the wireless router without any problems when there is no security, but when I add a WEP password, the S10 is unable to connect. There are two other laptops in the house (both older SONY VAIOs) which are able to connect to the wireless router with or without the WEP security, so I'm not sure why this problem is occuring. Also, I when I check the settings for the S10 vs. those on the VAIOs, they seem to be the same except that the S10 has a Broadcom Network Adapter and the one in the VAIOs is made by Intel. Has anyone been able to resolve this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
