Can I safely delete the D partition?

Postby jlayman920 » Thu Dec 18, 2008 8:56 pm

Just got my new s10 and saw that there is a "D:" partition that is as big as the "C:" partition. It also has a folder in it named drivers. Can I safely delete the D partition or at least reduce it's size greatly so the majority of space is on the C: partition?

Yes. I moved the "drivers" folder from D to C & used Acronis Disk Director to combine partition d with c. No problem.

Keep in mind that if you resize the C: partition, One Key Restore will not be able to restore to factory fresh install.

I just ordered an S10, and this is an interesting topic. Please excuse me, but I have some newbie questions:

Why would someone want to combine the C & D partition? Is there an advantage to doing that?
Perhaps when data is written to the HD, it goes to the C partition, and not the D. Is that correct?

Another question: How important is the One Key Restore feature? I've read that it takes up a lot of
HD space.

With two small partitions you are more likely to run out of space in one of the partitions. One large partition gives you as much space as possible. There is no real need to combine them though. Just plan ahead before installing programs.

OKR does take up around 8GB of hard drive space. The program is important if you ever want to restore your S10 back to a factory fresh install. However, if you have an OEM disk of Windows XP Home SP3, you can always delete OKR and just install XP yourself. Lenovo even supplies the drivers on their site. The license for XP is printed on the bottom of your S10.

BTW, I highly recommend placing a piece of clear packing tape over the XP license on the bottom of your S10. The license isn't protected otherwise and has a tendency to wear off.

so in other words, you could say OKR is not needed if I have access to a xp SP3 cd (from nlite). so this gives me the flexibility to dedicate C: to windows files, while D: is for personal use. Im looking to delete windows all together and install nlited windows.

As long as Windows accepts your license key from the bottom of your S10, there should be no problems.

sorry if i seem so ignorant, haha, but i've never really installed a fresh windows before. I know when i install windows, it will ask me to delete all partitions, and i should say yes. but how do i dedicate C: to only windows files, and a D: to my personal stuff?
