Best hard Drive replacement!

Postby xmarcelo » Mon Dec 08, 2008 10:16 pm

Hi,
I am looking forward to replace my 80 GB hard drive on my brand new S10.
I would like to purchase a:

250 GB - 7500 RPM - SATA 3.0GB... at least!
Any suggestion on brands ?

Thank to everybody!

Try getting the HITACHI Travelstar 7K320 HTS723232L9A360. Very good HD. :)

I did some research on Laptop hard drives and compared WD to Seagate power consumption. (Posted Here) 7200 RPM drives require more power. Something to consider given the S10's 3-cell battery. If you want efficiency, go with a 5400 RPM drive.

With all that said, I bought the 7200RPM, 320GB Seagate Momentus because it was the most power efficient 7200 RPM drive. I don't think there really is a bad drive though.

I've installed the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 gb disk (WD5000BEVT). It's basically the same disk that my s10e was shipped with but it has more capacity (500 gb instead of 160 gb). I think the performance is OK despite the fact that it's "only" 5400 rpm. I did consider the 320 gb 7200 rpm Scorpio Black, but in the end I favored storage space over a marginally (unnoticed) performance gain. The disk that I got has the same working temperature and sound as the factory install, I think the Black version is a little bit louder.

Because of the disk, I now have my entire music and DVD collection with me were ever I go :D

Mindstorm,
Did you use the CMS products software to clone your HDD? Did you retain the use and function of the OKR?
Thanks, Dave

Mindstorm, did you manage to run Quick Start after you change hard drive? I was wondering what you need to install/update to get the Quick Start back after you install your new hard drive. Thanks!
