Lenovo S10-3 Disassembly Guide

Postby n17ikh » Thu Dec 30, 2010 7:56 pm

Hi all,
I noticed that some of you were looking for an S10-3 disassembly guide. I wrote one when I had mine apart and it can be found here.
Things of interest about the S10-3:
The bluetooth module is USB and could be easily replaced with something else or modded to have an internal hub.
The half-length mini-PCIe slot is PCIe and USB, the full-length slot is USB only.
A Broadcom 970015 (the newer Crystal HD) works fine in the half-length slot, but then you have to find a mini-PCIe USB wifi card.
There is a decent amount of space under the palmrest to mod things in.
2GB DIMMs work, but only with the latest BIOS update.
Can't think of anything else at the moment...

Nice, thanks.
Is it true that I will have to do most of this disassembly to get the LCD out for replacement? It looks like I can't get the lower corner screws out of the display bezel without removing the whole screen assembly, which requires removing keyboard, etc.

Unfortunately, I think this is the case. Looking at the netbook it seems like the bottom bezel screws are pretty well blocked by the body of the laptop, and complete disassembly is needed to remove the hinge screws (since they're under the motherboard). Good luck replacing your LCD, I didn't remove it in mine so I'd be interested in knowing how it goes.

The new screen went in fine.
I did have to take the whole thing apart to get at it, but the photos were very helpful in that process.

The disassembly guide you made is very useful. But for me that I am new in this stuffs(I'm professional in PCs, but in laptops my skills are very low  :D) , It was a little bit uclear. I want to fix heat-sink problem. It really makes me nervous. So I tried to open it, but at the first level, I couldn't disconnect SATA cable  , I couldn't disconnect keyboard too. I know if I go farther, I can't open and disassemble many other things :P. I wanted to ask if it is possible make a movie and show how to access heat-sink. Please ,please, please help me. I really love this device, but fan noise and its heat really disturb me. Would anybody like to help me, please?  :?: :!:

Hi n17ikh.
I have IdeaPad S10-3 (59-048215), it's looks like the model in your dissasembly guide but it doesn't have a bluetooth. And I have bluetooth module from HP 6710b (bcm92045nmd), so I need only a cable to connect this module to my S10-3. So I have two questions:
1 What model of bluetooth module installed in your S10-3
2 Can you make a closer picture of the cable connecting module and S10-3 (may be I'll make the cable by myself)

May be you have pinout of the bluetooth connector on the motherboard?

P.S. bcm92045nmd have a 8 pin connector.

I've got a original cable for HP 6710b. Connector for motherboard seems to be the same as in module in your S10-3. I'm still looking for pinout of cable for S10-3.

Thank you very much, your guide has been extremely useful.

I was looking for the magnetic sensor that detects the lid closing,
since I want to operate the device in a magnetic field.
The sensor is in the bottom right corner of the screen, below the QS button, under the bezel.

Desoldering the sensor works for my purpouses and have not noticed any side effect yet.
