The S netbook is NOT an Apple product and was never intended to run Mac OSX. Fortunately, enthusiasts have found ways to make OSX run on our netbook. However, the process may not be smooth for some. Make sure you have patience and time to get it to run. Most importantly, motivation to read and learn. This forum contains enough information to get OSX running. Most problems you may encounter can be solved just by reading through the forums or searching. So please take the time and read through the forums!

I thought it was going so well. I got the install up and running, partitioned the hard disk, started the installation, and then watched the progress bar crawl along for what seemed like forever (like 45 to an hour minutes maybe). Went off to do the dishes and when I came back it was still powered on but the screen was black and I couldn't figure out how to wake up the screen so I powered it off and decided to try again. Started the install again, but the power cord was kicked out midway through. Now every time I try to boot using the USB keys I get a grey background that looks like the Chameleon background and a flashing error, "Cant find mach_kernel". No bootable HD partitions appear on the screen. I've tried rebuilding the USB keys numerous times to no avail. Any suggestions on what to try?

Hit F12 (Fn + F11) to make sure you are booting from the USB drive. Then hit F8 to make sure the bootloader on the USB drive doesn't boot from the hard drive automatically. Go to the OSX Installation drive and type arch=i386 -v. This should work. I think what is happening is the hard drive is getting booted to automatically resulting in the boot failure.

First: Thank You treyjazz for the write up.

I can confirm headphones are supported on 10.6.0

Second: I have successfully booted Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6.0 onto my s10-3 on an MBR partition, which first loads to Chameleon where I am able to decide which operating system to use. So YES it is possible.

Feedback/Questions:

1. After installing Mac OS X, rebooting again into the installer and loading NBI{Utility -> Netbook Installer} the program only loads a small window where I decide which partition{install} to load the NBI and an install button.
There are no options at all; no "fix bluetooth" "Enable Remote CD" or "Enable Hibernation".
Question: How do I access these options?

For reference this is the step as described in your write up:
"Select the partition you just installed SL onto and when it is done
Uncheck Fix bluetooth (unless you have added a BT card) and Enable Remote CD (if you aren't going to be accessing CD/DVD drives across a networked computer) and Enable hibernation if it is checked then click Install and enter your password
"

*Since I was not able to find any options, I was not asked for a password; but how can a password be entered if an account has not yet been created?*

2. Even without being able to access the options menu. The NBI Utility reported as installing successfully, I held the power button until shutdown then rebooted. On reboot the system loaded straight to Mac OS X where I set up my username/password.
Mac OS X loaded with the following NOT working:
-Wifi
-Mic
-Sleep
-Webcam (works about 25% of the time with Photobooth)

After loading Mac OS X I found that the {Harddrive Name}/Extra folder was hidden, not allowing me to access the com.apple.boot.plist file or theme folder.

After doing some research I found a solution:
In Mac OS X type Cmnd+Shift+G (on S10-3 Keyboard it is Alt+Shift+G) then enter /Extra and it will access the hidden Extra folder. I was then able to drag my new THEME folder to the Extra folder and overwrite the default THEME folder.

*******Other Points********

In your write up you say to replace the file "InstaInstallerMenuAddition.plist" with the one in your S10-3 SL Disc Patch.zip The file in both the original directory and in your zip package are titled "InstallerMenuAddition"

From your write up:
Open S10-3 SL Disc patch.zip
Place the NetbookInstaller 0.8.5pre.app directory inside /Applications/Utilities
Overwrite /System/Installation/CDIS/Mac OS X Installer.app/Contents/Resources/InstaInstallerMenuAdditions.plist

Also I feel you should reformat this section for better clarity as follows:

*******
*Unzip S10-3 SL Disc patch.zip
*Open newly created S10-3 SL Disc patch folder
*Copy the NetbookInstaller 0.8.5pre.app folder to the following directory on your SL Install USB within Transmac:

/Applications/Utilities/

*Next copy the InstallerMenuAdditions file from your S10-3 SL Disc patch folder to the following directory on your SL Install USB within Transmac:

/System/Installation/CDIS/Mac OS X Installer.app/Contents/Resources/

(when asked to overwrite the existing InstallerMenuAdditions file, choose Yes)

The NBI app will sometimes give you the options before you install but I think it is stuck into the mode (in the NBI app include in the path) where it believes you have previously installed Chameleon and won't ask for any options.

I am glad to hear that one more S10-3 user was able to boot into OSX. Thanks for the feedback -- I have edited my original post. I just hope you will use OSX for good and not evil. :D

Extra is a truly hidden directory on purpose though it will appear in searches if you look for "Extensions" or any other file or directory it contains. I didn't include anything about it because I didn't mess with it with the install method I used.

Great insight! Thanks.

Have you had success with any forms of sleep? Either Lid Close or Fn+F1?

I am obviously able to get the Mac OS X to sleep but have no way of waking the system up (that I know of).

Also have you had success with installing Combo Updates? If so which ones and what steps did you take? 10.6.5 or 10.6.6 would be HOT!

Sleep is flaky with the default kext. It will sometimes 'wake up' when you press the power button but the keyboard doesn't seem to do much when in sleep mode.

The OSX combo update to 10.6.5 works fine as long as you have the battery out when you are updating.

It was weird... no matter what I did I couldn't get it to boot from the NBI_038F fixed USB again, even after restoring the image multiple times.

What I did in the end was:

1. Restore the Mac OS X SL DVD to USB
2. Run NetbookInstaller 0.85pre against the USB
3. Copy NetbookInstaller 0.85pre to /Applications/Utilities on the USB
4. Copy InstallerMenuAdditions.plist to /System/Installation/CDIS/Mac OS X Installer/Contents/Resources on the USD
5. Copy *.zip to / on the USB from your fixed NBI_038F
6. Copy Extensions.mkext to /Extra/10.6 on the USB from your fixed NBI_038F
7. Boot from the single USB

This got me installed, but without PS2 keyboard/trackpad support. Now I have to work out how to make that happen, but first some sleep.

Thanks so much for putting this guide together!

In order to run the chameleon bootloader after the initial install you need to do the following

Press F12 (Fn+F11) on boot. (Lenovo Screen).

Highlight the small USB stick (with NBI-083F)

Press Enter, then immedietly after tap F8 as the screen loads

this will take you to the chameleon boot screen

without pressing f8 the system is set to autoload whichever partition is set as active, in most cases that would be the freshly installed Mac OS X, which should load but will not yet be patched to support your S10-3.

I just get a flashing cursor top left when I try to boot from the small USB.

I'm still trying to work out why this is happening, but is there a way to patch from within the new OS X install using the files on the small USB? I can mount the USB and see all the files on it; it just refuses to boot.

Also, I can boot from my OS X SL USB, which contains the files from the small USB as well. Can I boot from it and patch the OS?
