For anyone that has the same issue:
Well, I'm not entirely sure what happened. I performed a reinstall, which went much quicker (40 min as opposed to 1.5 hrs last time). I did 'erase' the drive again with disk utility. Anyhow, the reinstall worked and everything appears functional. The keyboard was not recognized at first (on 1st boot), but I ignored the error and by the end of the initial set up all was well.
