Super Simple Dual Boot OSX with Windows 7 guide

Postby laocheebye » Sat Aug 29, 2009 10:57 am

I have spent almost 5 days of headache to get my s10 to install with OSX and Win7. But after many trial and error test i have finally succeeded in a dualbooting s10 that works incredibly beautifully. So now I am going to save you all the trouble and present to you my super simple guide.

First are the requirements:
Retail OSX 10.5.6 disc (must be retail, not the mac bundle)
Big enough usb drives, or external dvd rom
And a working mac from your rich friends (or another hackintosh from your cheapo friends like me  )

First are the requirements:
Retail OSX 10.5.6 disc (must be retail, not the mac bundle)
Big enough usb drives, or external dvd rom
And a working mac from your rich friends (or another hackintosh from your cheapo friends like me  )

First up:

Follow this guide (http://osx.mechdrew.com/guides/method1.shtml) to the letter to get a working 10.5.8 osx on your s10.
This guide is super simple and you get a great working osx install.
Now this install would install your osx on as guid partition table. To install windows 7 you need MBR partition table. So here's a workaround that is going to waste your time.

Download carbon copy cloner (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html) and then install it on your mac. Now you need to create a new disk image of your working osx. So when you run the software click on your own osx drive and then click on new image and save that image to your desktop. Save it as read only image. It's gonna take around an hour so go have a cup of coffee.

After you got your disk image (.dmg file) done, copy it into a usb drive ( I copied it into the drive i used to install osx). Now time for some heart breaking action.

Boot up from your osx installation usb drive again, and then repartition your drive again. YES repartition it to lose everything that you have done so far.
Now you partition it into 2 partitions (or 3 if you want a partition for data only). First partition format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The 2nd partition for your windows 7 just partition it as ms-fat.
After that CLICK ON THE OPTION button and select MBR and not GUID. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

Now after everything is done and you wiped off your osx installation. Click on your osx partition and click the restore tab. Since you cannot install into an mbr from a retail disk,
you are now going to restore your working osx installation into a MBR partition table. Select your OSX image file as source and drag your OSX first partition into the destination field.

Now go ahead and restore it. It will take another hour and so you better have lots of coffee. When you are done with restoring the image, you can now exit out of the installer and install your windows 7.

Windows 7:

You will either need a external dvd rom with the installation disk or make a bootable usb drive( dont delete your osx installation drive you still need it) with the installation disk.
You can follow this guide to make one, it's simple. http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-insta ... ing-guide/

Now boot up from your windows 7 installation disk. I presume you would know how to install windows ( who wouldnt?) When choosing where to install you would have to reformat the 2nd partition into ntfs. Just choose the partition and click format.
When you are going to install, probably you would hit an error that you cannot install into that partition. No worries restart your pc and boot again from the windows 7 disk. Now it would allow you to install. (wtf?)

Install as usual, let it restart a few times , and presto so simply you get windows 7 on your s10 (much simpler than osx !!) One problem. Your osx bootloader is gone and you just boot into windows straight without seeing osx.
Now we will try to fix this. In windows, type cmd in the command prompt, then right click and run as administrator.

At the command prompt, type

DISKPART> list disk
Will show you a list of selectable disks

DISKPART> select disk n
[where n = the disk number]
(usually 0, your only hard disk)

DISKPART> list partition
This will show you the partitions on your selected disk

DISKPART> select partition n
[where n = your OSX partition]
This will specify the partition

DISKPART> active
Will make your OS X partition the first-boot active partition

DISKPART> Exit
Leaves DiskPart...

Now osx is the first partition and then restart your comp. You think all is well now right and the bootloader will show up again?
You are so wrong!

Now boot up your pc again with your osx installation usb. Press a key at the bootloader and choose your osx installation. Now you are in! yay!

But still have lots of work to do. Go to applications in osx and right click on the netbookinstaller app. Choose show package contents. Then navigate in some more to find a Support files folder.
Then go to the bootloader folder. Then the chameleon 2 rc 2 folder. You will see 3 files. boot0, boot1h and boot.

Download this app called open terminal here. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/morei ... e=feedback
Install it and drop the the chameleon 2 rc 2 on the open terminal here icon in the dock. It would open terminal in this folder structure.

Now you got to experience working in the terminal in osx.

Type sudo -s and enter. Enter your password.

Then dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk0s2 and press enter. It will say 2 file copied or something.

Then cp boot / and press enter. Now type exit and restart your com.

YES finally after all the !@#$%^ hard work you've done ( and after I almost overheated my s10 and broke the 6 cell batt), you can now see the bootloader when you start up your s10.
Press any key and try to boot into windows 7.
If windows 7 throws you a black screen with some !@#$ error, then there are more things to do (sob sob).

For windows 7 unable to start error:

Boot in with your installation cd. Choose repair my computer. Most probably the cd wont auto detect your error and fix it. You gotto make it active again.

Go select the command prompt and the go through the DISKPART thing again. (You're probably good at it now like me)
This time though make your windows 7 partition the active one.
Now restart your com again and boot with the windows 7 installation disk again.
Now choose repair your computer and windows 7 will auto detect the error. Choose repair and restart. When you have restarted, you can boot into windows again, but wtf!!! you lost your osx bootloader again.

Now restart and boot with your OSX installation usb. When you are in, DO THE TERMINAL THING AGAIN to copy the bootloader back. You can just copy boot1h this time. No need the cp boot.
Now when you boot into windows 7 you have gotto to the DISKPART thing again to make your OSX partition active again.

Restart your com and voila!!! Sweet success!!! Now you can be proud of your s10 and show it off to your friend like me =)

All the best!

I'm working this guide now. Would the guide work if you put XP into the extra partition instead of Win7?
Same instructions for the boot loader in XP? Or is there something else to do?

BTW, I found this page http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index ... _Dual_Boot that had some great instructions on setting active partitions using Terminal under OSX (in case, as I did, you have to do this at some point).

I think it will almost be the same as long as you're installing to mbr. i think xp would be much easier than win7 since it doesnt mess with the boot code like win 7 does. And yup getting familarised with terminal under osx can only do you good ;)

I am in another situation: I have a lenovo s10 which is dualbooting winxp and osx 10.5.8. Now I want to upgrade my win xp to win7 without having to reorganize the whole booting-thing.
Is there anybody out there who can help me? Or do I have to follow all the instructions above and re-do the whole thing?
cheers
-l.

by the way my current system boots first into the windows menu where I can choose winxp or os x and afterwards -if you choose osx in the first step- it gets into the darwin boot mode where I can choose again winxp or osx...

i'm not really sure about the easybcd method or the chain0 method as i hate to see 2 bootloaders. but i think u can safely delete xp and install win 7. you just have to do the easybcd or chain0 thing again for the bootloader to show up =) and i think if win 7 gives u an error then u just need to run the installation disc to do a repair and it will boot fine.
