It actually sounds like the machine might be overheating. My personal machine runs cool, it gets warm where the CPU is and I could see it overheating if the vents are blocked for any reason. My wife's runs alot warmer, the only real difference in our machines that can effect it is I have a SSD and she has the standard 80gb drive, I have 2gb of ram, and she has 512mb.. Neither of us have any random standby issues. I frequently will render graphics or encode video on my machine, even though it takes alot longer than my other machines, its just for convenience or for work related stuff that I cannot get to my home office to do.
I'm not sure if there is a way to check the temp of the CPU and other hardware in this laptop, as I've never attempted to do that, but if your fan isn't kicking on and off under load, or staying on under really heavy load, this "could" be your problem.
There appears to be a few minor issues addressed in the new Bios update, there also appears to be several things fixed that aren't documented at all in the readme, its possible a bios update could help your situation.
