S12 Nano Recognizes 3GB ram

Postby GROCH » Tue Jul 21, 2009 2:07 pm

My S12 Via Nano arrived today. One 1gig chip on board, and one empty slot. Only having a 2 gig Crucial hanging around I plugged it in.

Bios shows 3072 mb, Windows XP shows 2.75GB (I assume the lost .25gb is borrowed for video).

Is this normal, I thought these things were locked down at 2 GB max?

I have been having a few random lockups/freezes.... What program can I use to check memory to see if it is the culprit?

As the Via is a 64 bit processor it would be nice for Windows7 / 64 if it can use 3gb.

The VIA Nano supports up to 4gb RAM, whereas the Atom only supports 2gb max. It's the CPU that limits how much RAM can be addressed, so it looks like you've got an advantage there over the Intel crowd.

I am not celebrating victory just yet.

I am getting freezes every 5 minutes or so with the 2 gig chip in (Crucial ddr2 5300). It may be that the Nano will recognize 4 gb on a 64 bit operating system, but only 2 gig on XP 32bit.

Or, the ram may not be compatible (works fine on my S10, but different board/processor). I would be interesting in hearing the results of others as they get shipped.

What is the speed of your RAM? It might be good to make sure you're using the optimal speed memory WRT the system capabilities.

This is from the STICKY on another post under hardware, and this is the ram I picked up:

Im not sure if this is the correct forum to post this so if it isnt please feel free to move it.
I thought we should have a thread on the best current deals on RAM.

It is a Crucial CT2CP25664AC667 2 gig stick 256mx64 PC2-5300 which is CL-5.

It does post, it just freezes up. Perhaps a slightly different part would work.

There is a BIOS update for the Via Nano version of the S12 that will fix this issue. I had the same issues you were having after putting in a 2 GB Kingston stick.

It doesn't look like they have a fix for the Atom version of the S12 that will support > 2 GB of RAM.

That's because the Atom doesn't support more than 2gb of RAM. Hardware limitation.
