Just ordered an S10e (Toronto, Canada)

Postby DaveTO » Tue May 12, 2009 10:42 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm in Toronto, Canada, and I just ordered an S10e, with the 6-cell battery and Bluetooth, from lenovo.com. It's black, as there are no colour options in Canada. The plain S10 is also not available here, though I would have chosen the S10e anyway for the Bluetooth and glossy screen. I don't think I'll miss the 24 pixels all that much.

It should ship within 7 business days.

I've been looking at this machine for the past little while, and just learned about the S10-2 yesterday. I was quite torn about whether to wait for it, but I finally decided this evening to go ahead and get a S10e. I find the new design really unattractive: the shape, the finish, the hinge, and even the keys. It just looks cheap. And who knows when it will actually be available (and if it will still be longer until it makes it to Canada)?

The only things that look good about the S10-2 are the right shift key and the bigger touchpad. But I've decided that I'll just try to get used to the weird shift key on the S10e, and if I can't, I'll just switch it around with the up arrow by remapping the keys.

I'm planning to replace Windows with UNR 9.04. I've already been running Ubuntu on my desktop for years, and I really like the looks of the remix as a netbook interface. This machine will mainly be for light use around the house, at the coffee shop, and while traveling, but since the hard drive is the same size as on my desktop (a Mac mini), I'm thinking I might like to synchronize my home directories. Can anyone recommend a good file synchronization solution?

Thanks to everyone who posts here. I've already learned a lot about the S10s from reading these forums.

I'm sure I'll have more to say once I get my IdeaPad!

Hi DaveTO,
Congratulations on purchasing the S10e!

You should probably go for rsync (http://www.samba.org/rsync/) or unison (http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/) to sync the data. Try both to see which one works best for you. They both have GUI front-ends if it matters :)
As for me, I'm currently relying on rsync for non-critical data (music, movies, books) and git for personal documents and projects (it enables versioning). I can't say I am happy with the setup though because they sometimes behave weirdly on a FAT32 partition that I have to use for my data (because of the triple-boot environment on both computers).

Thanks for the recommendations vaskas! Unison appears to be just what I'm looking for.
