Lenovo Outlet (Refurb'ed S10)

Postby snehne » Wed Apr 22, 2009 8:17 pm

I am wondering if anyone here bought S10 from Lenovo outlet http://stores.channeladvisor.com/LenovoOutlet

There they have 3 classes, "redistributed" (new), "refurbished" (used), and "scratch and dent".

Currently they have a bunch of 1G/160G/3cell refurbished ones.

What puzzles me is that they seem to have identical spec, but varying prices ($277 to $334). Why is that? Are the cheaper ones more "used"?

I have bought refurbished stuff from other places and they are never visibly "used" (other than missing the original packing stuff).

I missed the $298 deal last week, so a refurbished $277 (3cell) seems the best I can do, if it is not old looking.

Thanks,

Sean

The pricing difference is pretty much as what you described. I have purchased several desktops and a couple of Thinkpad laptops over the years from IBM/Lenovo. The age and condition plus how long they have had it on the shelf play in the price.

Probably what I would call the worst of the "scratch & dent" units are those being sold after being returned from leasing. Something that they left off their list of reasons of availability :?:

These units have had visable wear, but I've been lucky as I have only had one laptop that had a display problem and the complete turnaround was less than 4 days (I live about 80 miles from the depot).

Being a "leasee" of them at my workplace, we get a detailed list of "extras" at the end of lease where we'll get charged for a new case, bezel, wristpad, etc. Funny thing is that similar units I've purchased from the outlet store have never had new parts on them  Sounds like car leasing.....

The S10's are not leased AFAIK, so they are more than likely listed pretty fairly. If the price is attractive enough, I would go for them. To be honest, they are probably returned units that had the webcams hosed from the firmware update several months ago.....

I've got one on the way that was $238 at the Lenovo Outlet. I couldn't see much difference other than ram and hard drive size. As 2GB of ram and a Vertex ssd are going to be installed, I chose the cheapest version they had. UPS tracking has mine arriving Thursday!

I just ordered one for $248 with free shipping. I had to do an advanced search to find it as there are no S series IdeaPads listed otherwise. Looking forward to receiving it and putting OS X on it ...

I didn't get a notice until Wednesday, so it took about 36 hours. Got notice that it shipped today though so now we'll see how long it takes to get here.

Refurbished is almost always "as good as new." Some people have issues buying something that has been used or returned for whatever reason, but a refurb is generally certified using the same quality control as the brand-new counterpart.
