8 gb Express Card SSD for $9.99

Postby Der_Kommissar » Fri Feb 20, 2009 8:53 am

Hi all,

Newegg has a Lexar 8 gb express card 34 SSD for $9.99 w/ free shipping today only. I know this card has received mixed reviews in the past, but I don't think you can beat the price if you're looking for something to experiment with. I was thinking I'd use it for a ubuntu install to test it out.

I just ordered one. I figured that for worst case scenario I could use it for a ready boost drive when I upgrade to Windows 7 later this year.

I've been planning to order one of these anyway today http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812161002 in preparation to upgrade the 80 gig hard drive I have to a 320 gig or 500 gig. So I just added the drive to my order.

I hate having empty slots... :P

I just ordered one too. I needed an SD card anyway, and it was all free shipping, so what the heck.

Does the express card "stick out" past the rest of the case, or does it "flat"?

Mine arrived yesterday. It does stick out about 1/2 inch.

I also had to tweak the bios to let the computer boot with the card in the slot, no biggie.

I just checked the tracking information for the order, and they sent the darn thing to Kansas City. I live in St. Louis. Idiots.

Just got the drive today, so I wanted to share my observations.

1. It works in XP & OS X, but it does so because it shows up as a USB device. I'm pretty sure that its usb in both windows and os x. I wonder of Lenovo only implemented the USB part of the express card spec?

2. It benches faster than a 8 gig usb stick I have, but not by much. It's about half as fast for writes as the stock 80 gb hd, but it's access time is less than 1 ms (compared to 17.4 ms for the hd). That may help somewhat with performance.

Anyway, its no speed demon, but it works in both operating systems and does not stick out too badly. I think I'm going to use it for backups.
