You can now download for free, a linux distro for netbooks that looks like this:
Image

Download link here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft ... 46&lang=en

And articles about this distro here: http://www.engadget.com/tag/mie/

The article about this image creator release here: http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/05/hp-t ... installer/

The image looks very much like HP's touchsmart PCs. It looks very smooth compared to most ubuntu distros that I've tried. The question is... Can someone get this distro to work on the S10????

I got it half-working on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) last night on my quad-booting S10. The themes and some utils worked, but most didn't. It changes just about everything about the interface- dumbs it down even farther than Netbook Remix. And kills some required wireless networking utils in Jaunty.

I say "half-working" because the snazzy media player (MediaStyle) and other required binaries don't like the i386 architecture type of the Jaunty Ubuntu Netbook Remix flavor. The HP binary debs are all compiled against the lpia (low-power Intel Atom) architecture type, which is a nightmare to cleanly blend in with regular Jaunty. And its compiled against Hardy, which is also a PITA. Further adding to the fun, the HP MIE installer (shown above) wants to repartition the entire disk, which is a no-no.

I'm currently re-installing from the 8.10 UNR lpia CD, and after that I'll throw the HP apt repositories on and see where I get. I do expect 100% success, as I've got all the pieces I need in-place.

I can make a step-by step guide when I'm done, if anyone's interested.

I would very much like to see an installation how-to on this.

I currently run Windows 7 on my S10 with stock partition settings(C: for windows, D: called 'Lenovo', and service partition)

I would love to be able to install HP MIE on the 30gb D: partition with dual boot.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Not a problem, once I get it working. ;-) 8.10 and 8.04 have some significant library differences, which is slowing my progress. Ideally, I'd like to keep it close to HP's distro, since security updates are important.

I may end up creating a separate, non-destructive MIE ISO for people to use. I'm about half an hour of frustration away from doing that.

I don't know if this will help you or not(I'm a linux noob), but the MIE ISO Creator downloads a full Atom ready image before it it installs on to your USB drive.

Can't wait for your guide!!!

Thanks so much in advance!

So I went and downloaded that image, and took a look at how they're doing the install, since I grew tired of fighting the Ubuntu Repository Wars. Really basic- shell scripts that end up copying the required root filesystem and kernel onto the given partition(s), installing the bootloader (grub), and rebooting.

I think I'm going to go that rout to get MIE on the S10, rather than just adding the packages. Should make life easier. I've gotten it to work flawlessly on my S10, after a bit of work. I zeroed it out just now, so I can re-create it using a documented method.

Having said that... If anyone wants to play along at home (DISCLAIMER: which I don't advise, since it might bork your disk's existing master boot record and/or data), I'm going to assume you've got a disk partition set aside for Linux. Preferably 2, in fact- one for the root (ext3 is fine), and the other for swap. I nestle both of mine in an extended partition. Root can be as big as you like (no smaller than 6GB for safety), swap should be 1.5x the amount of RAM your S10 has).

I should have the "real" guide up late tomorrow (I'm having a new breaker panel put in at my house, so I can't guarantee I'll be of much use during the day), but if people wanted to get some prep work done beforehand, you should get crackin' on the partitioning first and foremost. If you need to, that is. To resize partitions, and do freaky stuff with disks in general, the tool you'll want is called GPartED - the GNU Partition Editor. Don't worry, its graphical. I use a handy USB-bootable Linux called SysRescueCD: http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manual-en_How_to_install_SystemRescueCd_on_an_USB-stick, that includes it.

You will probably also need 2 2GB+ USB sticks to make the "installing MIE process" easy, but it can be done with just one. Or a USB CDROM drive and a SysRescueCD (from the above URL).

Oh, and people should download the image from HP onto a 2GB USB stick, too, and hang on to the recovery.img file that the HP utility downloads. I did it from Windows XP, btw.

I can't really guide people through repartitioning, though... Too many dark roads frought with too much danger. Google up yourself some GPartEd guides.

Okay, its 4am my time and I'm sick of XIE and Ubuntu for tonight.

Wow. I guess people like this theme a lot.

Here is an article at arstechnica about this exact process.

[EDIT]

Engadget is now reporting on this project as well.
