Since I've relied on so much information I've seen here as well as other places, I figured that it's a good idea to post my process and results.
My current config:
Lenovo Ideapad S12
Intel Atom N270
Intel GMA 950 Video
2GB RAM
160GB HDD
6 Cell Battery
Etc.
What I did:
Used Windows PC to do the following:
TransMac formatted a USB key to use NBI 0.8.3 NBI Image
TransMac formatted external USB HDD (100GB but it doesn't matter at that size but it's what I had) to use Snow Leopard 10.6.0 install DVD
1. Connected both USB key NBI image and USB HDD SL 10.6.0 installation media.
2. Booted to NBI image then loaded SL media.
3. Configured internal HDD with 1 partition.
4. Customized installation to drop everything but the basic install and X11 (not that it mattered in the end).
5. Removed battery as per a suggestion I read here.
6. Started installation.
7. After the installation completed, it said it was going to restart. It didn't. I power off and remove all USB devices.
8. Power on and let it start normally. This takes several minutes and at points there is no apparent HDD activity.
9. Followed the prompts to set up a new computer. Configured wireless later since I use WPA2 and there is no provision for configuring during initial setup.
10. Ran the updater. This apparently updated to SL 10.6.7. Remember to have the battery removed.
11. Rebooted.
What I've learned so far is that if you are going to do updates that update the OS then you want to remove the battery since that causes the system to crash.
What's not working (that I can tell):
Sound (haven't bothered to try)
LAN (haven't bothered to check but don't see a need since everyone says it doesn't work)
Haven't looked for other issues but the camera does work in every aspect I've tried.
Good luck.
