Gnome Mplayer status bar stutters screen while shrinking

I only mention this because before I upgraded my nearly effortless installs, this worked seamlessly, and being as it was the first time I'd seen gnome-mplayer, I was impressed with how it shrank and re-grew the video to accomodate the status bar... but now I just turn it off all the time because it really bothers me.

Did I slow down my video rendering speed by upgrading? I'll check with gnome-mplayer support if nobody else has run into/solved this.
