I also had the "Can't find mach_kernel" a few times and and got by using either the 2 usb sticks in the machine as stated in the guide to boot the partition with SL installed on it (my logic was that maybe having the install usb in the machine tricked it into behaving properly), or strangely enough pressing enter a second time after the error message appears on the screen for it to work (this may be related to a timing issue). After googling, it sounds like a chameleon problem.
