Discussion on installing OS X

The S netbook is NOT an Apple product and was never intended to run Mac OSX. Fortunately, enthusiasts have found ways to make OSX run on our netbook. However, the process may not be smooth for some. Make sure you have patience and time to get it to run. Most importantly, motivation to read and learn. This forum contains enough information to get OSX running. Most problems you may encounter can be solved just by reading through the forums or searching. So please take the time and read through the forums!

Thankfully after reverting back to 0.8.3 all is fine.

I also had the "Can't find mach_kernel" a few times and and got by using either the 2 usb sticks in the machine as stated in the guide to boot the partition with SL installed on it (my logic was that maybe having the install usb in the machine tricked it into behaving properly), or strangely enough pressing enter a second time after the error message appears on the screen for it to work (this may be related to a timing issue). After googling, it sounds like a chameleon problem.

Thanks for the update on NBI, I'll add some notes to the OP.

Information regarding NBI 0.8.4pre : http://www.meklort.com/?p=186, the sleep problem and other advice is noted at the bottom of the page in the known issues section. Install this version if you are installing windows as well (see point 3 in the above linked page) and can deal with OS X not sleeping until the version is updated (shortly - see the end of point 2).

Yes, I've been popping in on meklort and mechdrew every few days since I got back on the OSX scene. Sounds like they'll be ready for 10.6.3 when this release goes public.

Silver,
got a question
Used your method and everything has worked flawlessly, except two things which seemed to stop working today
Before closing the lid would put it to sleep, and i could adjust the brightness with Fn and the up and down arrows, now neither work
It wakes up fine with just opening the lid so i know its not a hardware problem recognizing the opening and closing

Just wondering if you had any suggestions to get them working again
Thanks

Enabler or NBI? I'm actually not sure either way, but the Enabler seems to be suffering a lot of problems lately. It also depends on what updates you have and such. I'm using NBI myself.

I used the enabler, 1.1.13
Did not update snow leopard since it was running fine on 10.6
and have not installed anything that i felt could have screwed anything up

Hi Silverzero.
first of all, thank you for putting this together. i just bought a new HD for this SL project and was able to follow your instructions quite well... to the launch of the Chameleon bootloader, then i could not see the bottom of the screen (or bottom of the Installation GUI)

".. Select the Mac OS X Install DVD from the menu to launch the installer. Once it boots up, enter Disk Utility and partition your drive as you see fit..."

my GUI installation screen was cut off at the bottom. i was able to select the language English "blindly" by pressing enter ... but after that, i can't really go forward blindly (without seeing contents on the bottom)

my model is 4231
my firmware is 14CN94WW (just upgraded)
RAM: 2GB
HD: 60GB

update 1: i was able to make 2 partitions by using Disk Utility (it's doable on the TOP menu) but i can't "..go ahead and click through until you hit the Customize button..."

Please help, Thanks.

NBI or Enabler? The Enabler has a fairly widespread issue with sound as of the latest version.

I've never had this problem with my S10, but some users have. It's been discussed in some other threads in the OSX forum. The search bar on the main page has been missing since the theme update, but you can still search within topics a bit lower down right above all of the topic links. I'd start there.
