Uncommanded Stand-by Problem

Postby skyeyedoc » Sat Dec 20, 2008 3:55 pm

I have an S-10 with 1.5 gig of ram, tri-booted with its original XP and Longhorn(One-Touch Recovery) systems, and with Ubuntu Hearty-Heron. Here's my issue:

The system will at seemingly random intervals enter Stand-By mode. It does so without reference to battery level, or whether or not it is on the power supply. It does it in both Windows XP and in Ubuntu. It has suddenly entered Stand-By mode during boot-up and prior to logging in to XP. This behavior also seems to be triggered by loading up the processor with playing flash-video (youtube media), while browsing, and using wireless. And it seems to be triggered at random times while running AVG virus scans from the XP partition (also a resource-intensive activity). I have disabled Hibernate mode in XP, but this doesn't have any effect.

Any clues for me out there? Lenovo's telephone support was laughable.

Thanks.

It actually sounds like the machine might be overheating. My personal machine runs cool, it gets warm where the CPU is and I could see it overheating if the vents are blocked for any reason. My wife's runs alot warmer, the only real difference in our machines that can effect it is I have a SSD and she has the standard 80gb drive, I have 2gb of ram, and she has 512mb.. Neither of us have any random standby issues. I frequently will render graphics or encode video on my machine, even though it takes alot longer than my other machines, its just for convenience or for work related stuff that I cannot get to my home office to do.

I'm not sure if there is a way to check the temp of the CPU and other hardware in this laptop, as I've never attempted to do that, but if your fan isn't kicking on and off under load, or staying on under really heavy load, this "could" be your problem.

There appears to be a few minor issues addressed in the new Bios update, there also appears to be several things fixed that aren't documented at all in the readme, its possible a bios update could help your situation.

I will look into the BIOS update. I'm not sure that this unit wasn't shipped with the most current BIOS; I took delivery about 6 weeks ago. I've rendered video on this as work, using a USB dvd drive and an outboard USB target hdd, and had no problems that day, but earlier this evening, in XP, running AVG in the background, it entered stand-by mode 5 times in 8 minutes while I was responding to email. Bleagh... In the last hour tho', since AVG finished it seems fine again.

Thanks for your input!

Were the conditions different? Sitting on your desk at work, then on your lap at home?

Who knows, best of luck, hopefully the resolution is just a simple update. My Lenovo has a manufacture date 5 days before the latest bios release, and it was not updated at the factory before it was sent out.

Hi did you resolve this? My Lenovo S10e has been doing this lately. I also think it's because of overheating. Please let me know if you found a fix. Thanks

I agree that this can be a result of overheating. Had that thing with one of my old laptops back in 2002. However, it can be a virus as well. It can also be electrical fuse. Anyway, make a check for viruses and if nothing is found go meet your Lenovo service guy ;)

I'm seeing similar behavior on my S10. It seems like there is an issue with the hinge switch. Try going into the power options control panel and changing the settings for "When I close the lid of my portable computer". If that fixes the problem (or reduces it to the screen blinking off momentarily) I suspect you're in the same boat. I'm under warranty, but I'm not sure that it's worth the effort.

I have this issue from time to time and I'm pretty sure it's due to overheating - the system is shutting down to avoid dying. The problem stops if I prop the unit up on something for better airflow underneath. The intake ports appear to be the grille along the underside's front edge - don't forget that keeping the intakes unblocked is just as important as the output port!

You might try one of those laptop cooler devices. I got a Thermaltake iXoft (because it's fanless) for my brother and he says it does a great job keeping his laptop cool.
