Lenovo S10e - used recovery, now can't boot from D drive

Postby Danko_ba_nanko » Fri Aug 14, 2009 11:49 am

Hi all, since this is my first post I would like to say hello to all and I hope I get to learn something new here since I am not that experienced.

Well I have been reading a lot about being able to copy/clone C drive to D drive in order to install application sw without running out of room.

I have managed to do this with EASEUS partition master, after which my D rive (160 Gb) became C, and vice versa. Than for some STUPID reason I used shipped recovery disc to revert SSD 4 Gb to original, because I did Windows update and I wanted to have factory setting as backup, which I did. Than in same matter I used Partition master to copy disc C to D and than trough bios remove SSD HD from boot.

Now here is the problem, windows does not start after I exclude the SSD HD from boot list and my screen just turn black with _ in top right corner.

Also I tried to use Partition doctor from EASEUS, but when I use fixboot option result is same.

I also bought same netbook for my friend and I did the cloning procedure no problem with PM from EASEUS, I even copied entire Preload from my friends S10e and Copy/Paste it on D on my S10e, but that did not bring much luck.

Btw the "Recovery DIscs" which came with my netbook are for S9e not S10e, could it be that it did some thing that messed up my S10e so I can't clone it and use as boot drive?

Anyone with similar problem or solution please help, I almost throw it out of window today when all I tried for past three days failed-

Thnx in advance!

If you can handle starting over, just format the whole drive, partition it the way you want, and reinstall your OS to your liking. You'll lose OKR, but it sounds like that's not a problem for you.

Thnx for your answer,

but I am not that clear, do you refer to D or C (original preload) to be formatted? Have some one manage do format C and than reinstall Windows i.e. on C(preload) and that it worked?

I really do not want to mess up something so I can't boot at all.

Also when I tried to boot XP Proffesional copy which I got on CD and wanted to start recovery console it said to insert disc into drive A:??

So my question is how to install new OS with external CD if it asks to have disc A?

Thnx

I mean format the ENTIRE disc. When you boot with an XP CD, don't try to do a recovery. Just do a new installation. Delete all existing partitions and make your own using the XP installer.

But that is the prob, after I did a recovery from two CD's that came with s10e (one dvd one cd for xp SP3), it does not allow me to install new OS. My external CD starts the setup but than it asks for to insert something in drive A?? What drive A ffs?

Did you touch your SSD 4 Gb at all (I mean format it, installed new OS on it ect)? I am afraid if I format C (preload), and from the present moment I can't install new OS on D koz it wont boot from D drive, that I will not be able to start windows at all...

Do you know any good application that can help out to check my drive D if backup has "installed" some hidden partition on D which is prohibiting to boot from D (I know it sounds stupid, but I booted of my 2nd Lenovo S10e after cloning C to D no prob). So its 100% that backup discs did something to drive D (and if it did than Lenovo really sucks).

thnx, but I am so confused and frustrated so sorry for my attitude...

Use a Linux LiveCD (I recommend Mint) to read your files on your inaccessible drives. I guess I'm still not clear on what you are wanting to do. Maybe PM me and we'll work through this some more.

Hi all,

thnx for help I have been away for some time due to trip and now I see suggestion by mister.

@mister

I have already tried this suggestion (regarding fresh install on SSD using lenovo image and nortonghost), but it was unsuccessful. Although, I never tried formattng SSD 4Gb koz I was afraid that recovery will not work if SSD is erased completely ( and my problem booting from HDD does not work).

So my real question is will recovery work if OS which is on SSD is formatted and erased? Apparently from what I have been reading it could present a problem, if SSD is erased.

What also puzzled me is fact that after using the supplied recovery discs my s10e does not want to boot from D (or HDD drive) at all. I do not know if that is what Lenovo intended to prevent booting from D drive (which would be really unfair).

For now I installed Linux Opensuse which detects installed OS on HDD and SSD (but if I would uninstall Linux and than tried to boot I only get black screen with _ in top corner).
For now I can't figure out WHY??

As I said, I have another S10e which is factory preset and I had no problem to activate HDD 160Gb trough Administrative tools/Computer Management/Disc Management , created partitions on D (HDD drive), cloned OS to D drive and than trough Bios setup excluded SSD from BootMenu and selected HDD to Boot from with no problem. While on my where I used Recovery Discs that came with it I could not repeat procedure, that still remains big ??? why?

BTW, did anyone checked if this image of SSD that can be found on torrent is virus/spyware free, koz I have seen some files which did not match one on recovery discs??
