Start here:

http://www.linux.org/lessons/

Some of the info is a bit basic and/or not as useful now that things are so well integrated into most distros, but overall it's a great place to start understanding how to see and use Linux. I exhort you to understand what a terminal command does before you start using it. Not only will you understand errors better, you'll understand how to avoid them altogether (somewhat). :)

Great points covered by all. I also want to further it is to never accept default partitioning. Choose custom partitioning and create a separate /data partition always. It is really easy, almost self explanatory, and there are so many guides on this subject. The reason for doing this is that it not only prevents accidental mistakes like Tower mentions and it also allows the user to create a layout suited to his needs.
Defeat is not bitter unless you swallow it.
